About

The Stochastic Numerics (StochNum) group is delighted to announce that Dr. Thomas Trigo Trindade has been selected as a KAUST Global Postdoctoral Fellow for the 2026 Cohort of the KAUST Global Fellowship Program. Congratulations, Thomas, on this well-deserved achievement!

Thomas shared the following thoughts on what this fellowship means for him and his research within the StochNum group:

I am proud and grateful to have been selected as a KAUST Global Fellow. This Fellowship gives me the chance to undertake an ambitious research program, spanning from theoretical aspects to concrete applications surrounding the Red Sea.

Put concretely, the purpose of my Fellowship is to answer questions like "given what we know of the oil spill from this picture taken 5 hours ago, what is the most likely way the spill has evolved?" — and we want that answer fast. The project primarily focuses on developing and scaling up a mathematical technique called Dynamical Low-Rank (DLR) Approximations in the context of particle filters. By leveraging my PhD experience in DLR methods and working with both the StochNum group and the CLIMATics group at KAUST, I will build out this technique in a way that is mathematically rigorous and also relevant for real-life data assimilation applications.

KAUST provides an ideal environment to carry out this work; it brings together the theoretical and applied expertise the project relies on, alongside outstanding high-performance computing capabilities. I am excited to see where it leads.
